it's been a while since i felt like blogging not that i didn't have anything interesting to blog about, that's not true; a couple of weeks ago i was in Siwa a magical place in the Egyptian western desert
and i have moved to alexandria and rediscovering it

But i havn't seen a good American movie in a while. my friends called me yesterday and asked if i was up for a movie i was expecting a normal boring action movie. i would probably sleep after a long day @ work

but the movie was the kingdom it doesn't just another Action movie themed with the eastern-western conflict

it shows a clear display of both mindsets and gets you attached to bothe sides of the conflict and shows.

yesterday i was walking in the street minding my own business; thinking how will i be fixing this development issue ... and what will i be having for dinner that night .

i was facing a big street in hurghada and i saw something that looked like something flying with a lots of small fragments flying everywhere and landing in the middle of traffic.

i didn't understand what this was. my mind thought it was unimportant - it's hurghada a lot of tourists are doing a lot of crazy things - i kept walking then i started to notice everyone in the street is standing up and running towards that thing.

my mind woke up to explain that it's a horrible car accident and began decompiling the saved images OH my god that fall must have hurt and the hit must have been very painful as well.

then a woman started screaming and people started saying the guy is dead.

it's the first time in my life to witness an accident
i always arrive late; or compalin of the traffic till i find out it was an accident .

i was shocked for about 3 more minutes then i kept moving towards my hair saloon as if nothing has happened, a life was taken .. and

it only took me 3 minutes to continue with my life .... i don't know what's that about .

one of the most weird tv experiences is that when it's late friday morning on OTV a program targeted for housewives called "2a3dette settat"

no offence or sexism but this is the most bull i've ever watched in my whole life they have managed to eliminate guys (i really do hope that there's some women watching)

there was a couple of friends' emails and one of the viewers wanted to ask what to do as she had a few white hair thing.. she actually told her just ignore it or cut it and went "hahahaa... hehehe"

the other sent i like company and there's always my friends or family r there ... but my husband is always tired and annoyed of people over all the time ,,, this is really nice get a divorce "khol33"

i was on a couple of month project in Cairo and i had to leave my home in hurghada to my room mate

anyway when i came back i was catching up on the little thing so i heared that the fridge was broken and had to be taken to get fixed for a couple of days

the funny thing is that when the janitor was bringing it back and installing it his help was saying that he missed the ice trays he replied "they're not ice tray people" as rafraf my roommate explained

Rafik was surprised and it showed, the janitor seeing the look on Rafik's face he apologized ..

when the Janitor said they're not ice tray people he meant like we're not as the most common population of Hurghada Egyptians and foreigners alike they mostly drink....

what was really annoying that he found that us not drinking is an insult and he saw it fit to apologize for saying that

till a week ago i didn't know that a place like this exists in Egypt and this far in the south about a few kilometers after el Quoseer we found the place where me and a couple of my friends were going to spend the weekend we had a really good offer and we thought we should take it...

anyway the place is amazing it's called Dreams Beach... well the beach isn't so great there's a lot of corals on the beach and u have to walk with a diving shoe for a while till u can snorkle but the sun the clean air and the Enormous pool were really great

the staff was super professional always smiling always asking you if u need anything just look at one of them and he'll come running towards you even before asking for anything , i forgot my pool towel card the second day and the guy gave me one anyway till my room mate came back from diving and gave me my card back.

Video Games are a relatively a new type of entertainment only as old as computers all my life i've owned two game consoles other than that i have been playing PC Games

PC games are a whole other issues which really deserver another po... no a whole series of posts or even a blog..

geek as i might be, i only were going for the different games as most of the Playstation games which was the most dominant game station ever (which is my opinion) those games were available for PC with even more options and easier to get - at least for me- and gaming on such consoles didn't bring much difference form gaming on a PC

anywayzzz...

my first console looked exactly like this one, we had this very same box, it's one of the earlier versions of Atari 2600 might be the first version - note the wooden look - my father bought this one for me and my brother and i remember playing hours and hours its great games

it was years before its games became available in Egyptian market, well Atari 2600 became a classic game console and a collectors item.

there was this one Game which i really really loved it was called defender it has this very basic Graphics

but i remember having a lot of fun just because of the amazing game play

at this early time it was gradually being more difficult it had levels, it night variation of levels it had multiple actions like saving victims to save instead of just mindless shooting. man i still love that game

as playstation came out , i was playing most of its games or similar ones on PC i didn't feel like i was missing out especially with the PC advanced intelligent control the "Mouse" it was easier to play strategy games and
First person with multiple floors, ... anyway it still was the same for PS2, xbox ,xbox360 till the idea of a wii was there i remember the first time i saw that video earlier 2006

i was amazed by the concept and the demo that the wii executives were making of the tennis game

Recovering Programmer
Hi, my name is Kris. And I am a programmer. "Hi Kris!"

My problem started when I was young. My father took me to an IBM open house and showed me a game called LEM. The computer told me my lunar lander's altitude and my vertical speed, and asked me how much thrust to apply for the next ten seconds. I told it, and then it told me my new position or told me I had crashed.

It was primitive. And it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I had to understand how it worked, wield the power that made it happen, and use that power to make the world a better place.

My parents bought me an Atari 800 computer for Christmas. I don't blame them for my problem--they didn't know I was susceptible. They didn't know that I often stayed up all night writing programs. They didn't know that I spent my days in school drawing bitmaps on graph paper and mentally converting them to numbers. And they didn't know that the high of using BASIC had worn off, and that I was hitting the harder stuff: 6502 assembly language and figForth.

My problem followed me into college. There, they told me that my code could be beautiful in addition to being functional. And I had a Macintosh, so the programs could look beautiful on the outside in addition to being beautiful on the inside. I wrote socially acceptable programs in Pascal and Lisp. But late at night I would hide alone in my room and hit the hard stuff: M68000 assembly language, and C.

Then, after college, someone actually offered to pay me to fall deeper into my addiction. They encouraged me to use C. But that wasn't enough: I spiked the mix with some C++, Perl, Bourne shell scripts, and even AWK. I did object-oriented programming. I started mixing languages. I wrote programs that wrote programs.

Then my tolerance for programming languages was built up so much that I had to go beyond them. I did every operating system I could get my hands on: OS/2, Unix, OpenVMS, VxWorks, Windows, Linux. I wrote ActiveX control containers in MFC (back before MFC had support for that sort of thing). I wrote RPC, DCOM, and CORBA programs, because I was no longer able to generate enough complexity on a single computer.

When the high from those activities wore off, I bought QuartusForth for my PDA, so that I could write and debug code while sitting in airports, or in traffic, or while waiting for a compile to finish on my desktop machine.

I was looking for the next high. Would it be Java? Or SOAP? Or web services? Or Python, Ruby, C#, ...

My employers didn't help me. Rather than putting me into a recovery program and making sure I got some help, they just enabled my problem by praising me and giving me promotions, raises, bonuses, and stock options.

They asked me to manage a software development team. So of course, I assigned all the important work to myself, and also decided to fix or finish everyone else's programs. My little four-month project turned into a two-year project. And the irony is that I really didn't do much programming: the majority of my time was spent figuring out which randomly selected sets of version upgrades, service packs, and DLLs are compatible with one another, or figuring out how to work around the workarounds for long-standing bugs in the third-party products we're using, or telling the client what computer and networking hardware to buy and how to configure it. I've been working sixty hours a week for those two years, without any vacation. I've broken off contact with friends and family. There is no "high" from programming anymore--I'm now in a constant state of frustration and fatigue.

And it is not just the frustrations of programming that bother me. I am torturing myself to create systems that seemingly don't solve any problems nor improve anyone's life in any way.

I've finally accepted that my life has become unmanageable. I am powerless over computers and their hold on me.

I now realize that ProgrammingIsNotFun and SoftwareIsReallyPointless. I really shouldn't be trying so hard to turn my "complexity addiction" into a fulfilling career--it just isn't possible.

So, I am taking a break. I've quit my job. I will spend the next few months playing golf, playing guitar, reading non-geeky books, and learning to sail. I will use my computer only for what healthy people do with computers: e-mail and game-playing. When I decide to re-enter the workforce, I'll examine AlternativeJobsForProgrammers.

too tired from work after travelling from cairo to hurghada stayking for a couple of days and spending a day at the beach.

anywaze got on the plane , put my walkman earphones on and listened to stupid @#$@# house music that metwally put on my walkman just cuz i didn't bother changing its content. was my worst musical experience ever.... including Abdu el 7amooly.

well on the arrivals room i was first to get to the belt to get my bag. there was this nice girl in her sweats burnt from hurghada sun as usual i thought hey she looks nice. my brain did not compute that she was a celebrity then.

but in a few moments little girls gathered around her and their parents started taking photos of her. i thought HEYYEe this Menna Shalaby she didn't stop smiling. what really surprised me that she was traveling alone

she never stopped moving making it very hard for my half sleeping brain geek to get a picture of her and when she saw my flash she moved behind crowds like she's shy or something. well..... any way i decided to respect her privacy and kept my hazy picture to put on my blog .

well i think the reason where u like a specific sitcom or a movie is that you can relate to a character in it, i like "that 70s show" and friends cuz u can relate to their characters where my friends are the friends around me. both series have good memories with friends of mine watching it on our computers in cairo

friends i still have the complete collection and i watch that 70s show on mbc i have watched friends over 13 times and i am working on my 14th (geek i know) but hey i enjoy it more every time and i know that "that 70s show" only second season is being played on mbc but i still enjoy it even when i can lips whole episodes

last weekend after work it was about 11:30 pm we decided to go out on one of those outings that you can only go to in cairo, i wanted to go to a new place.

a friend proposed a place in "El Mohandeseen" which is a far place from where we're staying in cairo "Maadi". the trip alone took about 2 hours we enjoyed nilefm on the radio, house music was on but it was bareable, i like the station it's nice and they occasionally play rock music. i'll miss that i have to be on a laptop to listen to it outside cairo...

well weekend traffic is impossible in cairo 2 hours of sun packed trip to el mohandeseen was amazing and has reminded me how much i hated commuting in cairo today as i am blogging from hurghada it's really nice going from one place to the other in 10-15 mins tops. but usually where u need to go is only 5 mins away.

we went to a place called "El amoudy" which has the weirdest menu for arabian food we orderd stuff which we didn't really know how to pronounce it tasted "ok" but hey new experience

i just came home after watching the movie ....i feel depressed it was a good movie

which feels like someone has beveled all layers in a photoshop file - the story line is non-cliché and amazingly amazing

i am in cairo one of the biggest cities in the region may be the biggest in Africa i am not living in the suburbs or anything i'm living in el Maadi which is supposed to be a rich place..

i have electricity, gas pipes, air conditioning a 1mbps connection (with the normal disconnections and annoying service as usual ) that is more than the average in Egypt and i have no running water

it's been since the morning and it's now 11:30 pm, i actually had to go to a mall to use the bathroom...

today i was watching TV regular non satellite TV stations something wrong with our normal TV shows

i found out about a NEW TV station probably ain't new or anything just that it's just the first time for me to hear about it "el nile" which still does boring talk shows

"el OLA" is doing a talk show about wife beaters with wifes that have been subject to beating in the show ...

"el tanya" is displaying "LOST" which is very weird for me as this is relatively new and expensive show ...

also there was a series where "Ranya farid shawky" is a pregnant woman and people are blabbing un excited about the revolution it was the episode where the revolution actually takes place anyway it was very amatuerous (if a word exists) performance

anyway the point is that the whole experience is weird for me

Vodafone used to be -in my opinion- best GSM network, best customer care ,best services and variety of options

anyway now that "itisalat" is opening i am having all the trouble that someone can possibly have a couple of weeks ago i wanted to have an easier way to pay my phone bill i used to use prepaid cards and that was annoying cuz i used to spend quite some money on calls a month

anyway (again) i called vodafone and they were informative about the post paid service and i was very specific i don't want to visit the office every single months and i want to use master card to pay my bills, and if it was possible to deduct the bill automatically from my credit card the agent explained yes ofcourse this service is available and i can go to the nearest vodafone office to convert, then i was in hurghada and i asked if i can do that from RadioShack and he said no sorry u have to come to an office in cairo or alexandria to do it as u have to sign that you want the deduction to be automatic

so ok on my first visit to alexandria i went to vodafone el wezara and filed for a change and asked the agent to confirm the service and he photocopied my credit card no (i was quite annoying) and he confirmed that all the services i use will not be affected but.....

i lost GPRS immediately and i had to call to reactivate the service and i lost interntional calls as well so a week later i called the customer service to find out that i have to dictate the CC no over the phone (i knwo this is normal in the US ) but i didn't trust the security of our phone lines

so i went to the office in el wezara as i was in alex and the guy said no we don't provide the service of automatic deduction and this was only to prove that i can pay my bills and i have to deposite a 1000 EGPs to be able to make international phone calls

This morning standing @ Alexandria train station the sun was nice, a little beautiful child with a pony tail was asking her mother to sit on a big leather hand bag, the kid looked like she was standing for a long time her grandfather was wearing one of those glasses that was popular ten years ago a clip on sun lenses over his normal medical glasses, & her mother was a veiled nice woman which is “Egyptian fat”.

A guy in his late thirties –not married- you can tell by the way he dresses and the calm way he did his hair a hand free of engagement rings confirmed it, he moved on the concrete train station seats to have a space for the little girl, she kept asking her mother in this child “can I” tone, her mother still didn’t answer

An older lady was sitting probably didn’t bear the mother ignoring her little kid and asked the girl to sit in her place as she left her place and moved to another place in the train station, the kid became this nagging thing that you want to kill yourself.

The kid turns to her grandfather and says “Daddy, can I please sit on the bag”; Oops well I never saw that coming, the guy is not her grandfather he’s her father; I can see now why he’s so annoyed there’s a big age difference between him and his wife – but who am I to judge him for all I know I might even end up an old guy like him – the guy keeps ignoring her, well anyway the kid gives up on trying to get any attention and sits quietly on the bag, I certainly do hope that doesn’t affect her life.

I turn to the other side as I get bored a guy with a long messy hair with a full body moves I can only see him from the back he struck me as Libyan with his red biret hat (I don’t know how to write that u probably know what I mean ), I hate myself when I do this generalization thing I feel like a racist I hate myself when that happens I control myself and I say who knows.

It turns out he’s Egyptian he’s “Mohamed Negm” the Famous Egyptian Actor it just turned out to be an older version of him wearing this expensive slippers that Arabs usually wear –I know I know like Egyptian are not Arabs anyway won’t discuss this now – well I was surprised to see him get on a second class train I know him cuz I used to work in dokki next to his theater that plays only plays for his son and actors that you wouldn’t hear of. He has turned into a version of himself that no one on the train station would recognize him

The train arrives I walk to my carriage 2 carriages away from where I was standing I see all sorts of people moving in all directions tall white guy (really tall with blond gouté with really short Egyptian looking (not fat this time) wife , a veiled woman with her 12 years old son wearing white shorts and tshirts with a back pack containing two squash rackets

A “Omda” going to Cairo asking every single person he passes by if this was the train, a priest with his over conservative family of women his wife and a set of four girls with calm faces talking and smiling, I found my seat no one is sitting next to me on this trip and there’s no number on the wall for me but I can guess

A nice woman sits on the seats across the aisle she’s like me in her late twenties looking all dressed up probably for an interview in Cairo, I can see a tattoo on her writs of the crucifix, like most Christians in Egypt, she opens a big bible and starts marking passages as I start writing this post.

I save the file as I put my laptop to sleep she zips her Bible and coughs puts it in her hand bag; I sleep too, Probably this is my longest post ever wrote; probably won’t make u suffer like this again , sorry u had to read this :)

Back to Cairo

by the previous post u've figured out that i have moved to Cairo to do work for my company spotlocal.net the next 2 months is the time planned to spend in Cairo to finish this project

when i left Cairo 6 months ago i missed it's outing and the junk food but in a couple of weeks i started to like Hurghada more

when i am here again in Cairo now i haaaaate the traffic things that should take 30 mins (Hurghada time counters) take at least 3 hours just because of the traffic

of course we had to take a nice drive from Hurghada to Cairo using Tamer's car and his generously helpful Friend (thank you Man) with all the needed equipment to work on this project we also recruited some nice people to help

this time we had to drive less than the speed limit for quite a few reasons

we had the fragile equipments in the cars trunks
tamer's driving license has been confiscated since the last time
there was a very nice traffic police truck driving @ the speed limit that we couldn't possible pass :)

then i realized that this is the closest i have ever worked near my home i live & work in the same place which is nice this morning i wore my pajamas to work hehe (of course no one was there yet) but i always wanted to say that :)

today after i answered a phone call i noticed this weird thing next to my signal indicator

it was the sign "3G" i guess that Vodafone is testing 3g service in Egypt now i am in maadi distict in Cairo (i certainly hope that they're not charging me for it as i don't know how to use it ..... yet :)

update called them they said no they're not charging us it's for testing in some districts in cairo and it should support video and high speed internet

today i have learned the weirdest thing i was watching google screensaver (look it up,niiice) anyway

it displayed an image which looked like an Egyptian temple AND the sentence has a comma and then Madrid!!!

i waited for the images to have a full cycle and the image was redisplayed and it said Temple of Debod so i went to google to search what is that

my best guess at this time was that it is a joke or some weird Amon priest has traveled to spain or exiled

but i found out that it was a GIFT to Spain and not during the Egyptian Kingdom when we're a republic in 1968 as a tribute to their help moving Temples during the high dam period

is it just me who didn't know (yeah i usually don't know things like that) or this is something that is being hid (not like the mesalla in US)

walking by the sea in alexandria is always a fun thing to do, today is sham el nessim woke up late and had a shower, then went out for a walk there's a spot that i always like to sit there for hours

but as today is sham el nessim there's a hell lot of people that have thought same as i did and i went there to find this, being there i decided to go check up on starbucks they're opening in San Stefano mall facing the sea

they didn't open yet that was weird for me cuz i expected that they'd be open by Easter anyway there was a lot of activity there so i went and asked the guy if they had wireless connection available there and he said yes sure we'll be open tomorrow morning @ 6am i really did like his spirit the guy was very excited about opening it looked like a bee hive everyone is doing something over there.

i am now in cilantro waiting for michael WALLA YA MICHAEL

Easter night outing

just got home from a nice outing with my friends earlier this night i met my college friends they're all married "ya 3eeny" they were dressed in suits and they looked @least 10 years older than their real ages (that reunion thing with suits turned into little ceaser as it's the only place with empty tables)
it was fun to have a reunion of course that didn't last for long they had to go home early that's ok

@ 10 pm i called my cool single friends in, who i discovered were staying in this cooool café in city center called "le mondo" the cafe is nice it's designed to be on the second floor of a cars agency and using the same décor we stayed their talked and enjoyed the drinks

it was 1 am already so we decided to leave the café and go home it was late; But just across the street Tamer Basha Hosny was having a concert and cars were barely moving

the traffic was stopped and the cars filled the whole parking of Carrefour City Center we still manages to go home, there was a micro bus that had an idea to get use of the need and drove people through a road that is not used

the new governor of alexandria is searching for the long lost Tomb of Alexander the great
this is a joke that is being passed around as the new governor has decided to rebuild all sidewalks in alexandria and this process has been undergoing for months since he became governor, really if this doesn't turn out to be a real good job people won't just miss "El Ma7gob" the previous governor of alex (who restored the lost beauty of the ancient city) but they also would curse the new guy when they see him in the streets

i hope this ends soon this picture i took is in front of building in alex (zizenya district)

just in case you don't know he's the great roman conquerer and founder of Alexandria - his tomb location is still a mystery and is believed to contain a lot of treasures

don't read this if u haven't seen the movie

the movie as you know is about that kid an inventor trapped in his present he's excited about the potential of his future but is being set back by being an orphan

the scene with the adoption interview with the guy saying that's interesting was very frustrating; at that time of the movie i thought that all the ideas he explained were possible in the next five years (including the flying cars) but the guy said in a non believing tone "that's interesting" when the guy saud that i could here my friends saying "GEEK " already that's ok

anyway that's not what i wanted to post about for this movie

i was always amazed by this idea "will the future be less exciting to discover of i already know about it" that is every time i read or see a movie about time travel

sometimes when i get confused and i don't know if i am making the right decision i wish i could even have a hint about my future something that says everything is gonna be alright, but then i think NO that's not a good idea, that would just take away the fun of living and making decisions

i believe time travel is not possible in any way, and i have the proof -sorry Einstein- if time travel was possible and it "was invented" in the future we'd have time travelers in our time now isn't that so
